ADAS LiDAR systems

Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) systems are a key part of the current suite of Advance Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These sensors enable vehicles to provide safety critical functions and full autonomous driving. In achieving Autonomous Driving Levels L3 and L4, LIDARs play a key role by supporting cameras and radars with object recognition, distance estimations and dynamic mapping.

Design considerations

  • With multiple LDARs potentially required for full 360-degree sensing, design is spatially limited
  • LiDAR are often mounted on exterior part of vehicles therefore need to sustain vibrations and large temperature variations from exposure to the exterior ambient
  • Use rugged and robust packages like Nexperias LFPAK and CFP packages which further supports space saving, thermal efficiency and high reliability levels
  • LiDARs requires high frequency switching and high current capability for the laser actuator
  • System requires superior resolution, faster response times and greater accuracy for mapping
  • Fast communication is required to the ADAS Control Units, with adequate ESD protection
  • Small signal discrete and logic devices can add additional safety features and functions that are independent of the main control unit
